Please note: This news story may contain information that is no longer current or up to date.

Thirteen Aviation students from Nottingham College have begun new jobs at global airline support service company Swissport this summer, as part of the college’s Swissport training academy.

Some of the group have already taken up their new positions as ground staff at East Midlands Airport, and the rest are busy completing their induction ahead of the busy summer period.

Rinnell Cotterill, from Clifton, recently completed her Level 3 Aviation Operations course and is now employed at Swissport.

Rinnell said: “I am now a Customer Service Agent, a job that my tutor really helped me to get. I've been doing different things such as checking people in and boarding them onto the planes, and meeting aircraft that have landed.

“The course at Nottingham College helps you work towards the job, and I think after the course you'll know aviation inside out and be able to decide whether you want to work in cabin crew or as ground staff.”

Debora Szucs, 18 from Nottingham, said: “I enjoyed learning everything about aviation and it means I now know something about the job I'm going on to do. I also liked my tutors as they are very good teachers, and I liked the way they taught us.

“Now I am going to start working at East Midlands Airport as a Passenger Service Agent. I'm so happy to have got the job and I'm excited to start work. In the future I'd like to do more qualifications.”

The Nottingham College Swissport Academy has been preparing students for a career in the aviation industry since 2016, and successful students get a guaranteed interview at Swissport at the end of their course.

Sharon Revill, Aviation Lecturer at Nottingham College said: “We aim to get students work-ready and prepare them for the high standards of the Aviation profession. We’re delighted that our partnership with Swissport provides a springboard to a career for our students.”

Denise Williams, EMA Passenger Services Trainer at Swissport said: “The joinswissport recruitment team from East Midlands Airport working with Nottingham College increases Swissport's Employer Value Proposition within the community, and provides a great source of aviation-minded talent for our core roles. The partnership is a rewarding experience and it’s mutually beneficial.

“Our goal for the students is to support and coach them into successful careers within the industry that they aspire to succeed in. We are impressed with the facilities and the approach taken by the tutors who are enthusiastic and knowledgeable. It is a great environment to learn about this industry.”

At the Academy students learn the skills needed for airport ground handling services while completing a qualification, and gain valuable work experience with Swissport at East Midlands Airport.
