News: ​‘Biker Down’

Motor Vehicle students now have the basic skills and knowledge to deal with the scene of a road accident thanks to the Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue service’s ‘Biker Down’ workshop.

Presented by Fire Fighter Chris Trendowicz at the College’s London Road campus in the City Centre, the session covered the basics around road safety, including: scene management, first aid and helmet removal, and the science of being seen.

Students got the chance to try CPR and learnt how to remove a bike helmet safely. Amaad Sajid, 18, from Aspley, is studying Level 2 Motor Vehicle. He said: "The workshop was really useful. I ride a motorbike myself and often drive through quiet country roads. I once drove past a road accident which involved two cars. I panicked and didn't stop because I didn't know what to do. Now I have the basic skills to know exactly what to do if I was in this situation again and I know I could do something to help."

Motor Vehicle Lecturer Paul White was involved in a serious motorcycle accident five years ago. He said: "I had to be air lifted to hospital after my accident with head injuries so I know the importance of learning road safety skills like this. Luckily the people around me knew what to do, and because of the way they reacted, I'm still here today.

"For many of my learners they are just starting out on the roads, so safety demonstrations like this are really valuable. Not only is it making them safer on the roads, but it's also equipping them with the basic skills and knowledge to be able to deal with the scene of road accident if they were ever faced with it."
