News: College Statement on Student Mariam Moustafa

Please note: This news story may contain information that is no longer current or up to date.

Today (Thursday 15 March) the College is shocked and saddened to report the death of 18 year old engineering student Mariam Moustafa following a violent assault in Nottingham City Centre on 20 February.

Nottingham College, Vice Principal Curriculum, Yultan Mellor said:

“Everyone at the College is shocked and saddened to learn of the death of Mariam. Our thoughts and condolences are with her parents and family at this difficult time. We will do anything we can to support the family. Mariam was a well-liked and able engineering student at our Highfields campus with strong aspirations for her future studies and eventual career. Mariam was a keen student, who worked hard in both theory and practical sessions and was doing very well on her course.”

Faculty Area Manager Jono Porter said:

“Like many of you, driving in to work today I have been struggling with my own sadness and tears and thinking about the first time I met Mariam last academic year - she had a cast on her foot and was saying that she wanted to follow an engineering course, all my focus was on the cast on her foot and I thought "no chance". However, until this terrible incident Mariam was proving me wrong. I remember that she used to tell me off because I could never say her name correctly and that always made me smile. The staff who knew Mariam knew what she was like, I know you are all proud of her. Her Dad told me that he was proud of the college staff and the work that we put into supporting her thorough her studies and for me that is special as it further proves that I have great people round me who want the best for our learners.”

The College is discussing a suitable tribute for Mariam and we will communicate this in due course.

Any students affected by this shocking news should speak to their personal success or learner achievement coaches and the Employee Assistance Helpline is available for staff.

The College would encourage anyone with any information about the attack to call Nottinghamshire Police on 101, quoting incident number 335 of 21 February, 2018, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
