Work experience with Barratt and David Wilson Homes

Work experience with Barratt and David Wilson Homes

30/08/2018

Leading Nottinghamshire developers Barratt Homes North Midlands and David Wilson Homes East Midlands have committed to giving 65 local students work placements out on building sites.

This comes thanks to a new partnership between the developers, the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) and Nottingham College, which aims to give the learners hands on, trade experience alongside their academic studies.

The placements will be held at the developers’ sites across Nottinghamshire which include Edwalton Park in Edwalton, Hollygate Park in Cotgrave and Kingston Banks and Lantern Fields in East Leake.

The students will be able to shadow an expert in one of their chosen trades such as plumbing, electrics and painting and learn more about the building industry. Alongside learning about their preferred trade, they will also be given the opportunity to spend time with other trades to gain a more rounded experience.

Chris Southgate, Managing Director at Barratt Homes North Midlands, said: “As a leading developer in the area we are deeply committed to providing students with the opportunity to gain hands on experience at one of our live developments. We are delighted to have teamed up with the CITB and Nottingham College to offer these placements.”

John Reddington, Managing Director at David Wilson Homes East Midlands, said: “We have a number of developments in Nottinghamshire which provide the perfect platform for young people looking to get into construction to learn more about the industry. The placements are now underway and we look forward to welcoming more students to these sites over the next few months.”

Nathan Wilkins, Local Manager at the CITB, said: “High quality work experience is key to construction students being ready to start their careers.

“It is really pleasing to see the local college and forward-thinking employers working together to help young people get the experience they need. With over 8,000 new construction workers needed in the East Midlands over the next five years the young people who get these places will be in a great position to start a successful career in construction.”

James Whybrow, Vice Principal Partnerships, Apprenticeships and Enterprise at Nottingham College, said: “We are thrilled that two leading employers in the construction industry are supporting this initiative, and we hope to hear from many more employers over time who wish to come on board and offer work experience programmes for our students.

“The College’s ambition is to ensure that all students are able to undertake a work experience placement, which will stand them in good stead for their journey into employment.”

The housebuilding sector in particular offers a tremendous variety of roles and career opportunities for everyone and Barratt Developments is proud to be one of 70 companies who have signed up to the Home Building Skills Pledge to collaboratively address the UK skills shortage in housebuilding.
