A celebration of creativity

A celebration of creativity

27/06/2017

From giant cars made from scrap metal, extravagant costume design, moving furniture, and jewellery made from nature; these were just some of the creative pieces displayed at Nottingham College's City campus last week (22nd – 24th  June) as part of the students’ End of Year Art and Design Show.

The exhibition, named ‘Watch this Space’, marks the end of a busy year for students, who have been working hard over the past few months on their final projects. The end of year exhibition is the opportunity to celebrate and to share with the public their talents before they progress to university, further study or employment.

Eighteen-year-old Romanie-Jade Tulloch is studying Level 3 Fine Art and showcased a series of colourful canvas prints which she embroidered and painted with ink. “I based my final project on crowds and how people stand out as individuals. My prints are themed around different cultures and include an African lady, British man, Asian lady and a Jamaican man.

“Now that my studies are coming to an end I am going to concentrate on growing my own business, selling my artwork to the public. I’ve progressed so much since I first started the course, not just knowledge and skills but also my confidence, and now I’m excited to use this to see where my business takes me.”

Sam Riley, 19, from Illkeston, made a giant car from scrap materials, including a full- size car door which he sprayed himself. Sam is progressing to Coventry University to study Automotive and Transport Design and his dream is to work for Jaguar, Rolls Royce or Land Rover someday. He said: “I’ve always had an interest in drawing and a love for cars so to combine the two would feel more like a hobby than a job. I really enjoyed working on this project and I’m so pleased with the finished piece. It’s a nice end to a really busy year, and now I’m looking forward to starting university.”

Aspiring architect, Bence Borbely, 20, is studying A Level Art and Design, and his final project was themed on vertical structures. He said: “My end goal is architecture but I love art and design, and I particularly enjoyed this project because I was able to bring my passion for art, graphic design, minimalism and architecture all together in one place. I started off with drawings of the Victoria Flats in the City Centre and from that I produced screen prints on large plastic boards and also did some t-shirt printing. The course is great because you get to explore so many different aspects of art and design.”

Jonathan Laud, Head of Faculty – Creative Arts, said “Our students have outdone themselves once again. Each year I’m impressed by the standard of work, and this year they’ve stepped it up another level. The show is a fantastic opportunity for our creative courses to come together to display their work in one place and I was really pleased to see so many people come to enjoy the exhibition.”
