Congratulations to one of our talented Art & Design student, Isabelle Poulson, for being awarded second place at the renowned Penguin Books, Adult Fiction Cover Design competition.

When asked about how she felt upon receiving her award, she said: I was very shocked to have been initially shortlisted for the award and to come second was even more of a surprise!”

The standard of the shortlisted designs was really high, so I really didn’t have any expectations of placing. I was over the moon to have done so well and to start my design career on a high.”

Isabelle’s outstanding artwork caught the eye of a prestigious judging panel, which included British author, Bernardine Evaristo, Penguin General Art Director, Richard Bravery, and Penguin General Deputy Art Director, Jon Gray.

Alongside her completing her Foundation Diploma in Art and Design, she is also working on her portfolio of book cover designs, in hopes of securing a position as a Junior Designer in the publishing industry.

After coming second in the Penguin Design Award competition, I realised how fascinated I am by this industry and how much I’d like to be a part of it”

Speaking about her experience and time at Nottingham College, she said:

My experience at Nottingham College has given me more direction in my future and the confidence to go after a career that I want. Studying something that I enjoyed was the most important thing for me and being surrounded by other creative people who are passionate about art has encouraged me to continue to pursue it.”

Conceptually I loved this design. It’s so distinctive and well-articulated. The gaze is so compelling. I love the unconventional placement of the type
