News: Building Futures at Construction Careers Event
Friday 28th June saw the emergence of multiple construction companies at our Basford campus, for an employer fair. Dedicated to educating our students on all the career options available to them.
We had appearances from; Action for Construction, Jewsons, Milwaukee, Howdens, Saint Gobain British Gypsum, The Pythion Club, Wynbrook Ltd, Drury Joinery Ltd, The Army, Nottingham City Council, RMS Construction Development Ltd and our own Nottingham College Apprenticeship Team.
A whole host of people talking about the many career paths open to students with the construction sector. Providing vital information along with fun games and product demonstrations. The highlight of the day was British Gypsum promoting their partnership with the college by handing out their Apprentice of the Year award, chosen from over 1,500 plastering apprentices across the UK. This year’s winner, was none other than Amelia Bexon.
But the fun didn’t stop there, with Nottingham College having their own award to hand out. Kayelan Blair won Full Time Plastering Student of the Year. In addition to this, he received a certificate for achieving 100% attendance over two years. AP of Basford campus Carl Ara and Head of Faculty for Construction Rob Moore were honoured to hand out the award, this time with a box of goodies donated by British Gypsum.
We are immensely proud of Kayelan Blair and Amelia Bexon for their outstanding achievements. Kayelan’s dedication to his studies and impeccable attendance have set a remarkable example for his peers. Amelia’s recognition as British Gypsum’s Apprentice of the Year is a testament to her exceptional skills and hard work. Their accomplishments reflect the highest standards of excellence, and we are delighted to celebrate their success.

When asked about their partnership with Nottingham College, Peter Baum and Ryan Seeley from British Gypsum had this to say:
We do all sorts of work with Nottingham College. The Thistle partnership means we provide materials and in college product demonstrations. We are passionate about skill building, creating multiple competitions to help encourage students to develop. The kids programme involves bringing children in from local schools, to do taster sessions with them at Nottingham College where they can learn a bit about the trade and the training the college can offer. We also run a 6‑week course in the summer where the Level 2 Learners can do some extra training with British Gypsum in partnership with Nottingham College. Overall, we work really closely with the college to provide the best experience for the students.

They went even further to highlight the importance of their relationship:
“Nottingham College is fantastic to be partnered with. The amount they put into the learner education is definitely seen by British Gypsum as a massive positive. They are one of our Gold Colleges within our partnership, with 51 other colleges involved, Nottingham College is certainly one of the top.”
A special thank you goes out to the Careers team and HOF Rob Moore, who put this event together. British Gypsum had these kind words to say:
“Rob is always fantastic with his interaction, always on hand to help and support. Not just us at British Gypsum and the Thistle partnership but also other colleges around the country. Rob is always pro-active and wants to get things up and running, with events like today.”
