Careers event gets students thinking about their futures

Students and school pupils have been inspired for their futures following the success of our Your Future careers and employability event, which took place from 20th to 24th February.

More than 330 workshops took place across our four campuses, with over 50 employers and organisations taking part. As well as networking with potential employers, learners also got to hear from a host of motivational speakers, including ncn construction alumni, who spoke about their experiences of the world of work, and about their new business venture - Think Big Developments.

Day three of the event saw more than 300 school pupils from four Nottingham City schools - NUSA, The Bulwell Academy, The Nottingham Free School and The Nottingham Emmanuel School - visit ncn Basford Hall for a whole day dedicated to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).

Other workshops throughout the week varied from plastering, brickwork and virtual welding demos to vintage hair, waxing and high fashion make-up techniques. Students even got the chance to step inside a giant 360-degree planetarium and got to handle exotic animals including a tarantula, snake and meerkat.

Award-winning, Nottingham-based Graphic Design company Touch Design sponsored the event and spent the morning with ncn Foundation Degree Graphic Design students for a self-branding workshop. Student, Ashleigh Perkins, said: “The workshop was so useful. It was something different and I got a lot out of it. We talked about the best ways to promote ourselves and standout from the crowd when approaching employers. It was fun thinking outside of the box; some of the ideas were things I’ve never even considered before. I came out of the workshop feeling inspired and confident, and I’ll definitely use the advice and tips when I start looking for a job within the industry.”

ncn Head of Student Services and event organiser, Helen Bird, said: “The whole week was fantastic and the support we received from local employers and organisations was incredible. What was especially pleasing to see was how many of our students benefitted from the event. Not only did it give them the opportunity to find out more about their dream career but it also gave them the chance to network with potential employers and make those all-important industry links.”
