News: Charlotte’s made-up about her dream career

Please note: This news story may contain information that is no longer current or up to date.

From weddings, proms and fashion shows to theatre productions, television adverts and even feature films! These are just some of the varied and exciting jobs that talented, freelance specialist hair and make-up artist, Charlotte Severn, has been working on since graduating from College last year.

Charlotte, 19, from Hucknall, studied the Advanced Level 3 Diploma in Theatrical, Special Effects and Media Make-up Artistry. Her interest in make-up started at a young age, which made pursuing it as a career an easy decision. But, it wasn’t until she attended a Nottingham College Open Event, that she realised hairstyling would also develop into a passion of hers, and one which would become a key part of her job.

She explains: “It’s a big deal deciding what course to study because it’s about taking that next step, and it can have a huge influence on the career path you take. I remember feeling daunted at the prospect of walking into the College for the first time, but I needn’t have worried, because the friendly staff made me feel welcome as soon as I walked through the door.

“My intention was to join a make-up course, but a lecturer advised me to start on the Level 2 Hairdressing course. It meant spending an extra year in training and studying something I hadn’t considered before, but I’m so glad I did, because I soon realised the two skills go hand in hand. I learnt so much during this time, particularly from working in the College’s commercial hair salon, which gave me the chance to work with real, paying clients, and that helped so much with my confidence.

“To anybody thinking about studying at college, I would definitely recommend attending a Nottingham College Open Event. The staff really know their stuff and understand the best routes to help you succeed. If I hadn’t followed the advice of the lecturer at the Open Event, I don’t think I could have gotten to where I am today as quickly or with as many skills or experience.”

Since the launch of her business last year, Charlotte is going from strength to strength. “It’s been challenging at times, and being freelance means you have to be self-motivated and really push yourself, but it’s worth it because I’m doing what I love to do. I get to meet new people, travel the country, and one day is never the same as the next.

“I’m still learning how to run a successful business, but the skills and industry experience I gained at College have given me the right footing, and if ever I needed any advice, I know I could call upon my former lecturer for help.”

If you’re interested in a college course, but unsure of the best route for you, why not drop-in to our next Open Event on Tuesday 20th March, 5-7pm?

Subject areas are located at different centres, so visitors are advised to check which campus offers the course they want and to pre-book their place online - family and friends are also welcome.
