Chinese students increase their automotive knowledge with Emtec

25/04/2018

Chinese motor vehicle students got a real insight into British industry and culture after studying through Nottingham College’s Emtec automotive programme.

Eight students from the esteemed Hangzhou Technician Institute (HTI) in China came to study at the leading Nottingham based automotive college, Emtec in April (from 9th to 20th) as part of an international exchange programme to further their motor vehicle knowledge.

The full time learners are studying an International Vocational Qualification (IVQ) IMI (Institute of the Motor Industry) Level 2 Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair in China. It is all part of a three year collaboration offering additional training and support outside of the qualification.

It is the second group from the Institute, based at Tonglu, Hangzhou, to study with Emtec and the third group from China overall.

Among other things, the students aged between 18 and 21, have been learning Health and Safety, vehicle inspections (LV0506) and participating in class with KIA and Hyundai apprentices through their practical and theory based work at Emtec.

The opportunity to come to study in England and particularly at Emtec, a globally recognised business, is a complete change for the international students as the Chinese Government doesn’t provide training whilst students are working - which relates to apprenticeships.

Sherry Chien, Emtec’s International Project Coordinator, providing additional support to the international students from China on the programme said:

“It is a mutually beneficial and fantastic opportunity for the students, as well as the members of staff involved with Emtec.

“The apprenticeship course modules and study in general in China is very different to that at Emtec and in the UK as a whole, so it has been a great opportunity for international students, who are passionate about the automotive industry, and seek to widen their knowledge in an enterprising employment led organisation. The knowledge and skills that they have acquired are invaluable for the students and can definitely be used globally to advance their careers.”

As well as learning to compare different approaches to the motor vehicle industry, other benefits to the international students studying with Emtec include gaining cultural experience and knowledge, enhancing their English knowledge and language, along with training to UK quality standards.
All the students have had a thoroughly rewarding experience as a result of studying at Emtec. They will now pass their knowledge onto both fellow students and teaching staff at the Hangzhou Technician Institute. Their experience will also support their future aspirations to make it within the automotive industry.

Megan (Haung , Wei), who was the only female student among the Emtec apprentices this April, celebrated her eighteenth birthday during her time with the international exchange programme.

Speaking of her experience during the programme, she said:

“I’ve been studying automotive repair for three years. During my career so far, I’ve learned a lot from the basic theory of automobiles to professional practice. Choosing to do an international apprenticeship allows me to learn more knowledge and have a better platform for the future.

“I have learned a wealth of useful things during the Emtec programme, which I feel will be a good stepping stone for my automotive career. Among other things, I’ve learned the ring car inspection, which is the correct route of inspection, the British way of vehicle characteristics and checks and how it all compares with China. One of my particular highlights is passing the loop inspection exam (known as the LV0506 assessment) and winning second place in the Health and Safety competition.

“My next step is to gain more automotive knowledge in China and obtain certificates in the study to perform better practice in the future.”

As a result of the successful partnership with Chinese colleges, Emtec Colleges Limited are currently discussing with partners in China to provide an adult up skill training and an apprentice training program in the future.
