Growing business reaps the rewards of an apprentice

08/03/2017

Growing business Artificial Lawn Fitters UK Ltd, based in Colwick, currently employs 17-year-old Emily Johnson as Apprentice Sales Administrator. Company Operations Director, Heather Watson, has been so impressed by her progress that the business is now looking to take on a further three apprentices in Customer Service, Accounts and Administration roles.

“Emily has been an absolutely amazing support to our sales team. She has fitted in so well and now I don’t know what we’d do without her. She’s extremely hard working, and because she’s young and enthusiastic she contributes so many new and fresh ideas.

“Her day-to-day tasks can involve anything from answering customer enquiries and inputting data to emailing clients and promoting the business through our social media channels. In six-month’s time, she will swap to our installations admin team which will give her an even broader range of skills and experience.

“In my opinion, one of the biggest advantages of employing an apprentice is the fact that they often have little to no experience; which means that they haven’t already picked up any bad habits. They’re often coming straight from school and this gives us the opportunity to train them in the most effective way to suit our individual business needs.

“It’s so important to us that we retain our staff, so we always try to go the extra mile to support them. It would be fantastic if this time next year Emily is still working with us and perhaps even training an apprentice of her own.”

Emily, who is completing an Intermediate Apprenticeship in Business and Administration, said: “I originally stayed on at school to start my A Levels but I soon realised that this wasn’t right for me. The decision to begin an Apprenticeship was the best I could have made because I’ve settled in quickly and the team have been so welcoming. I’m not treated like an apprentice, but instead I feel like a valued member of the business.

“My role is varied which I really enjoy, and this way I get to learn new skills all the time too. I particularly like speaking to our customers and being part of the sales process. I’m the first point of call for any enquiries that come into the office and then I usually get to see the progression right through to the end sale and installation which I find really interesting.

“An Apprenticeship gives you great experience of the working world whilst giving you a recognised qualification by the end of the programme. You learn transferable skills that will benefit you as your career progresses and obviously getting a wage alongside your training is a huge benefit. To anybody thinking about doing an Apprenticeship, I would say go for it!”
