News: Happy Pride Month! A blog written by Amelia Thomas
June is Pride Month, and the Students’ Union wants to celebrate with all of you! As Amelia Thomas, our newly elected Equality Officer for 24 – 25, reminds us, Pride is about so much more than just parties and parades. It’s a time to:
- Honor our history: We celebrate the brave individuals who fought for our rights, paving the way for a more inclusive world.
- Recognise the ongoing struggle: The fight for equality continues, and Pride is a platform for those who work tirelessly to secure equal rights for everyone in the LGBTQIA+ community.
- Celebrate diversity: Pride is a vibrant expression of the beautiful spectrum of identities under the LGBTQIA+ umbrella. Every single one is valid and deserves recognition.
- Embrace courage: The bravery it takes to live authentically as yourself, especially in the face of potential discrimination, is truly inspiring.
- Show our strength and solidarity: Pride is about letting the world know that we won’t be silenced or pushed back. We will continue to fight for a world where everyone, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, has the right to love, marry, and express themselves freely.
This month isn’t just about celebrating ourselves – it’s about being allies to our fellow students. Here are some ways you can show your support:
- Educate yourself: Learn about the history of Pride and the challenges faced by the LGBTQIA+ community.
- Use inclusive language: Respect everyone’s pronouns and avoid making assumptions.
- Stand up against discrimination: If you witness someone being harassed or discriminated against, speak up and offer support.
- Celebrate with your LGBTQIA+ peers: Attend Pride events if they’re happening in your area, or simply show your support by wearing your rainbow colors with pride!
Let’s make this Pride Month one to remember! Let’s celebrate, educate, and show our strength as a diverse and inclusive college community.
Happy Pride from the Students’ Union!
