News: How our Coaching & Mentoring course has inspired David to develop his own career.

Please note: This news story may contain information that is no longer current or up to date.

Over the past year Nottingham College have helped a vast number of small to medium businesses access free training courses through the European Social Fund. Our range of training programmes, and short courses aim to support employees to develop their knowledge and skills and allow employers to up-skill their workforce and further their business potential.

To celebrate National Mentoring Day, which took on the 28th October, we share how we have supported employees from local organisations, such as Dave Cottrell, develop their knowledge and skills to understand and undertake effective coaching and mentoring in a range of situations within the workplace.

DC Strategic Growth Ltd is a Derby based consultancy company specialising in developing local businesses. David Cottrell, Managing Director of the company got in touch with Nottingham College to find out more about our Coaching and Mentoring in the workplace course. As David has a strong background in consultancy and having previously managed a large organisation he wanted to formalise his experience though the course and gain additional knowledge in the theory behind coaching and mentoring.

As a small business, David was able to take part in the course free of charge, thanks to funding from the European Social Fund, through the Smart and Inclusive Leadership project. David tells us how the two-day course has allowed him to develop his own coaching skills and how he feels inspired to develop his own career in coaching.

I would like to say a few words with regards to the coaching & mentoring workshop that I have just participated in. It was facilitated in a wonderful manner by Amanda Petrie of Nottingham College. The workshops were both informative and engaging with Amanda mixing up her own teaching style to meet the needs of the various learning styles that she had in the group.

Upon completing the course, I gained a very clear knowledge in the differences between coaching, mentoring and counselling. By using breakout rooms, we had the opportunity to practice our questioning and listening skills and develop our own coaching skills. The best part of this experience was sharing and listening to my fellow students journeys and I was genuinely excited to hear their plans for their futures.

There were so many great parts to this workshop and the way that it was delivered but the most rewarding part for me was coming out of it with clarity and a plan of how I can develop a career in coaching.

Thank you Amanda I can honestly say that you have boosted my appetite and shown me the way forward.

 — David Cottrell — Director – DC Strategic Growth Ltd.
