News: Keeping our students safe on work placement

Please note: This news story may contain information that is no longer current or up to date.

Nottingham College seeks to offer as many of our students as possible, the chance of work experience or a work placement, as part of their studies with us. Our dedicated Work Experience team works with hundreds of employers to develop experience of work opportunities for our students, whether they be live briefs, experience on site or in an office, or through a formal work placement which could be anywhere up to three months.

We enjoy a longstanding relationship with Keepmoat Homes, a top 10 home builder with a nationwide reputation for quality affordable homes. The team based at The Edge in Nottingham have started welcoming back students to take part in work experience activities, one of the first of our employer partners to do so.

To keep their staff, and our students, safe they have implemented a number of measures which meet the Construction Leadership Council’s guidelines as well as the Government’s guidelines.

In addition to one-way systems, increased hand washing stations and extra signs, everyone going on sites, including work placement students, must complete a COVID-19 site induction module. Keepmoat Homes has embraced a consistent approach, ensuring the standards remain the same for students as they would for employees. This is encouraged as students gain real-world’ experiences of the construction industry and learn about the changes organisations have had to make in response to COVID-19.

Our priority is keeping everyone working on or visiting our developments safe. The additional measures we have implemented in response to COVID-19 allow us to continue providing work experience placements so students can use and develop the skills and knowledge they have gained at college.

Alongside the changes implemented by Keepmoat Homes, Nottingham College have also made changes to the Pre-Placement Employer Checks completed with employers. The changes ensure the employer’s policies and procedures have been adequately updated to minimise the risk of COVID-19 infection and have been communicated to all employees, including any students on work placement. In addition the College has also put in its own measures to keep students safe whilst on campus too.
