News: Nottingham College Apprentice Wins Bronze at WorldSkills UK

A motor vehicle apprentice from Nottingham College scooped a bronze medal at the WorldSkills UK national finals of 18 November

Automotive technology student Christian Wilson, 22, finished third at the Skills Show at Birmingham’s NEC. Christian had to complete a number of scored assessments during the 3 day event with almost 500 young apprentices, across 55 disciplines — as diverse as Aircraft Maintenance, 3D Game Design, Motor Vehicle, Plumbing, Beauty Therapy and Cyber Security — taking part in the national finals.

Head of Faculty for Automotive at Nottingham College, Gavin Varley, said:

To finish third in the country is a fantastic achievement for Christian and the College is very proud of his achievement.

Christian who works for Car-Tek in Pinxton said: 

I really wasn’t expecting to get a medal as the other finalists were more experienced than me and had already completed their level 3. We had some tough assessments during the day so I was I really pleased to be awarded the bronze medal.

Many of the winners now have the opportunity to go forward and be considered for Team UK selection and represent his/​her country in forthcoming international finals in Budapest and Kazan in Russia.

At the recent WorldSkills Finals in Abu Dhabi, known as the Skills Olympics, Team UK finished 10th out of 77 countries.
