Nottingham College Specialist Hair and Media Make-up students have been finding out what it’s like to work on a real theatre production, doing the hair and make-up for the cast of The Sound of Music, which was on show at the Theatre Royal between the 29th Oct and 2nd Nov.

The group of 24 Level 3 Fashion, Theatre, Media Hair and Make-up students were tasked with assisting the cast with their hair, make-up and costume changes for both matinee and evening performances throughout the duration of the show.

Beauty and the Beast, Annie and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat are just some of the hit Broadway shows Nottingham College students have worked on with the Nottingham Operatic Society over the years.

Actor, Abby Wells, who played the role of Maria von Trapp, said: The students were very professional, personable and punctual throughout the show. Megan, who assisted me, helped with an important, quick costume change, which, as you can imagine, was a lot of pressure, but she handled it so well. My role forms a big part of the show so working with students who are reliable and have great attitudes really put me at ease.”

Having already gained some experience from the Level 2 course, this really helped with my confidence. I was responsible for six cast members each day during the production. Timing was a massive challenge and it was very busy but it was really fun. I’d love to work on film sets, that’s the goal, so this kind of industry experience is so valuable.
