Nottingham Trent University are looking to recruit 3 Apprentice Laboratory Technician within the School of Science & Technology on a 2 year Fixed Term Contract. This is a training opportunity for an individual who has excellent attention to detail. THE INTERVIEW DATE WILL BE 3 SEPT WITH AN EMPLOYMENT START DATE SOON AFTER AS COLLEGE STARTS 11 SEP

We are looking to recruit 3 Apprentice Laboratory Technicians within the School of Science & Technology. This is an exciting training opportunity for an individual who is enthusiastic, motivated, has an excellent attention to detail and would like the opportunity to work towards a technical career in science in the HE sectors.

Assisting with the provision of high-quality teaching and research within the technical team, you will have the opportunity to undertake training and gain experience in a wide variety of science subjects while attending College on day release to undertake a L3 Advanced Apprenticeship in Laboratory Technician.

Line manager: Technical Team Leader

Job purpose:

Undertake training as a member of the Technical team, aid staff and students in Laboratories, Workshops and Studios, for the following subject areas: Science & Technology

Principal duties and responsibilities:

  • Undertake training alongside the Technical Team in cleaning equipment, ensuring work areas are kept in a clean and orderly manner and arrange for the cleaning of staff and student lab coats
  • Undertake training alongside supervising technicians with practical demonstrations of equipment to staff and students
  • Assist supervising technicians with the setup, to a satisfactory standard, the materials, equipment and apparatus for laboratory, workshop or classroom sessions
  • Prepare and carry out technical procedures following clear guidelines from supervising technicians and/or standard operating procedures
  • Undertake training in the routine maintenance and cleaning of equipment within own area ensuring equipment is in good working order, as instructed by supervising technician
  • Adhere to strict Health & Safety guidelines and procedures
  • Be aware of the key contacts within the School
  • Replenish stocks of consumables/stores of basic equipment etc. in order to ensure availability to meet work requirements
  • Carry out record keeping, filing, data inputting, cataloguing, fault reporting as required by supervising technicians
  • Commit to attend College for appropriate off-site training to obtain L3 Advanced Apprenticeship in Laboratory Technician. Attend regular progress meetings with immediate supervising technicians and/or Technical Team Leader to establish progress, evaluate ongoing training needs and attend relevant training courses as identified
  • The post holder may be required to undertake any other duties which may reasonably be required as within the nature of the duties and responsibilities of the post within the school, such as a requirement to work outside normal office hours dependent on the needs of the business

Qualifications required

Essential

  • Educated to GCSE (min 5 Grade C/Grade 4 or above) in English and Maths or equivalent qualifications, with a willingness to undertake further study

Desirable

  • Relevant A levels or equivalent (or equivalent)
  • Work towards a relevant technical qualification & award eg Registered Science Technician (R.Sci.Tech)

  • Able to get to employers address easily
  • Happy to attend college in Nottingham City Centre once a week

Training provided

You will complete the following on a day release basis every other week at college:-

  • BTEC Diploma in Applied Science Level 3
  • NVQ 3 Diploma in Laboratory and Associated Technical Activities
  • Functional Skills in maths, English and ICT all at level 2. Some candidates may be exempt from functional skills subject to meeting qualification requirements
