Nottingham College are looking to recruit an Apprentice Science Technician within the Science & Technology team. This is an exciting training opportunity for an individual who is enthusiastic and motivated.

Nottingham College has a fantastic opportunity for a Science Technician Apprenticeship,

General duties and responsibilities:

  • To contribute to the strategic direction and operational effectiveness of the College
  • Ensure the responsibilities of the post are carried out in a way that reflects the standards, vision and values of the college
  • Deliver on key performance indicators across the College, aiming to deliver continuous improvement
  • Promote the College with employers, sector bodies, schools and the local community, developing effective partnerships with employers, the funding agencies and other representative bodies
  • To proactively promote Safeguarding practice, EDI, Health and Safety and the well-being of all our students and staff
  • To complete and remain up to date with Mandatory Training
  • To participate in the College Professional Development and Review (PDR) Scheme

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Carry out technician and related duties in preparation and development of practical’s in Science
  • Be responsible for providing safe working conditions and safe working practices in accordance with COSHH regulations
  • Ensure all aspects of the Health and Safety Act (1974) are adhered to in the working environment
  • Be responsible for reporting damage; maintaining equipment; organising repairs; and purchasing assets/equipment, including PAT testing where appropriate
  • Assist in the development of new resources
  • Keep abreast of technical developments within the field of Science and Education
  • Supporting the Science team with all aspects of curriculum delivery
  • Liaising with academic staff to discuss timetables, equipment requirements and work plans
  • Running trials of experiments prior to classes and then demonstrating techniques for experiments
  • Preparing equipment and chemicals before lessons - from test tubes to state-of-the-art microscopes
  • Maintaining and repairing equipment and laboratory apparatus
  • Record keeping, e.g. for students' practical sessions, tracking methods, results, etc.
  • Ensuring that equipment is properly cleaned, and that chemicals, glassware and other equipment are appropriately stored
  • Cataloguing recordings and making them available when requested (if the department houses audio visual resources)
  • Supporting the work of teachers in classes and laboratory sessions and giving technical advice to staff
  • Working with individual students and supporting them on project work
  • Managing the stock control of chemicals and equipment
  • Ensuring that all health and safety procedures are understood and followed correctly
  • Coordinating work in the laboratory to ensure efficient use is made of expensive pieces of equipment
  • Work effectively and in accordance with organisational values to achieve the College’s mission and strategic priorities
  • Support, contribute to and take personal responsibility for implementing the College’s commitment to Equality & Diversity
  • Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement through participation in the Professional Development Review process
  • Support and participate in all initiatives to ensure the College has a safe and healthy environment for all students, staff and visitors
  • Carry out other duties that are required within the role as it evolves within the development of the organisation

Skills required

Essential knowledge:

  • Good standard of IT literacy, including standard Microsoft Office applications
  • Ability to follow both written and oral instruction accurately and efficiently, both independently and as part of a team
  • Good organisational skills with the ability to prioritise and work to deadlines
  • Good communication skills, with experience of communication through various mediums

Desirable knowledge:

  • Knowledge of relevant software packages e.g. Microsoft Office

Essential skills:

  • Good organisational skills with the ability to prioritise and work to deadlines

Qualifications required

Essential:

A minimum of 5 GCSEs at grades C/4 or above (or equivalent) including English, science and maths, with a willingness to undertake further study.

Candidate requirements

Happy to attend college in Nottingham City Centre once a week.

Training provided

Level 3 Laboratory Technician apprenticeship standard.

You will complete the following on a day release basis every other week at college:

  • Level 2 BTEC Diploma in Applied Science
  • Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Laboratory and Associated Technical Activities
  • Level 2 Functional Skills in maths, English and ICT. Some candidates may be exempt from functional skills subject to meeting qualification requirements
  • Employee Rights and Responsibilities (ERR) portfolio
