Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Principles (Level 3 City & Guilds Diploma) — Full-time

Course outline

This course is perfect if you’re serious about a career in the motor industry and want to take your professional automotive skills to the next level.

You’ll learn to test and diagnose more complex faults and complete repairs in engines, chassis, transmission and electronics. You’ll also learn more about the different job roles in the automotive industry and the tools and equipment used to maintain and repair vehicles.

You can expect to put everything you’ve learned into practice in our workshops at London Road, where you’ll be working alongside experienced technicians from a wide range of manufacturers. Each day you’ll be given a set of maintenance tasks and diagnostics to complete.

The course will teach you how to:

  • Diagnose and rectify light vehicle engine and component faults
  • Diagnose and rectify light vehicle chassis system faults
  • Remove and replace chassis units and components
  • Remove and replace electrical auxiliary units and components
  • Contribute to workplace housekeeping
  • Make sure your own actions reduce risks to health and safety

Aged 19 or over?

If you don't already hold a Level 3 qualification (equivalent to at least two A Levels, or a Level 3 vocational qualification), you can now study this course fully funded!

The Government’s new Free Courses for Jobs programme has created new opportunities for adults, aged 19 and over, to access fully funded full-time learning.

If you are aged 16-18 without having achieved a Level 3 qualification, you will also be eligible for full funding.

Entry requirements

For entry onto this course you must have previous relevant industry qualifications or significant experience.

If you are aged 16-18, you will need need to have achieved a GCSE grade 4 in both English Language and Maths prior to starting this qualification. If are 19+ you can undertake an initial English and Maths assessment to determine whether you are suitable for this course.

All applicants are invited in for a formal interview before a place is offered.

All learners need to complete a work placement as part of their course.

Teaching & assessment

You’ll undertake a range of practical assessments, online tests and written assignments to build your theoretical knowledge.

Progression

Choose to follow with a job in the motor vehicle industry in large main dealerships or smaller local providers.

Students aged 16-18 don't have to pay tuition fees.
