Diploma in Education and Training (DET) (Level 5) — Part-time
Course outline
This course is currently being phased out and will be replaced by the Cert Ed/PGCE in partnership with the University of Derby in September 2024.
Previously known as DTLLS, this course is designed for full and part-time teachers who hold a full teaching role. You’ll have the opportunity to gain a nationally recognised full teaching award and work towards qualified teacher status in lifelong learning (QTLS).
You’ll develop skills to enable you to refine and improve your teaching and learning as well as use constructive reflection in order to enhance your continuing professional development.
The course covers a number of topics over the two years including:
- Identifying and supporting individual student needs
- Learning theories
- Economic and political influences in the lifelong learning sector
- Curriculum design
- Behaviour management
- Reflective thinking
- Effective assessment

Teaching & assessment | You’ll be assessed continuously over the two years. Each module is assessed by assignments which include: reports; projects; essays; and case studies. You’ll also produce a professional development portfolio which focuses on teaching practice and involves lesson observations. The second year is delivered in a more blended approach with a mix of classroom attendance and online work. |
Progression | DET qualifies you to teach in the lifelong learning sector and gives you an opportunity to apply for QTLS status through the Education and Training Foundation. A person with QTLS status and membership of the Education and Training Foundation will automatically be recognised as a qualified teacher in schools. You could also progress to a BA (Hons) or master’s degree in education.
