Land Based Studies (Level 1) — Full-time

Course outline

This course is perfect if you love animals and would like to learn about their care, while exploring a career working with them.

You’ll learn about all aspects of animal care, such as:

  • Feeding and nutrition
  • Grooming
  • How to handle them safely and carefully

You will also learn about various professions relating to animal care including:

  • Veterinary science
  • Farming
  • Breeding
  • The equestrian industry
  • and many more

You can expect to learn in our dedicated animal care facility and take full advantage of our links with animal organisations such as Stonebridge City Farm and local riding stables. We also organise visits to places such as Southwell Racecourse and Yorkshire Wildlife Park.

You’ll also develop your literacy and numeracy skills and complete work experience, while gaining a qualification to recognise your achievement

Entry requirements

You’ll need 4 GCSEs at grades 3–1 (D–G), including English Language and Maths at Grade 3–1 (D–G) or a relevant Entry 3 vocational qualification. With this you will be asked to sit an initial assessment and this must show that you are ready to study English and Maths at Level 1.

Progression

Choose to follow with a Level 2 Animal Science course at Nottingham College, and after further study you can go on to build a career in a zoo or animal charity, or perhaps as a veterinary nurse, groomer or animal welfare officer.

Additional information

Students aged 16-18 don't have to pay tuition fees.
