3D Design and Architecture (Level 3 UAL Extended Diploma) - Full-time

Course outline

This course is perfect if you love design and want to explore how it is applied to spatial understanding, 3D creativity, modelmaking and 3D problem solving. It’s a great start to a career in architecture or 3D design.

You’ll learn creative design techniques, concepts and processes and in our 3D workshop and alongside the theory of design principles, gain practical skills in exploring 3D materials. These include:

  • Card
  • Wood
  • Metal
  • Plastics
  • Ceramic
  • Plaster

You will experience 3D rendering/CAD software and develop technical skills to support your creative ideas, research and resolution and explore the history of design and architectural styles and the impact of changing contemporary issues on design.

Live projects, competition, site visits and links with local designers and architects are embedded into the course to build employability skills. Work placements are promoted and supported to build your CV and progression opportunities.

In Year 1 all UAL Level 3 students on General Art & Design, 3D Design & Architecture and Graphic Design & Illustration will experience a broad diagnostic Term 1 and be enrolled onto a General Art & Design programme, that will provide students with grounding skills and knowledge in:

  • Creative mark-making
  • Research skills
  • Digital recording and presentation
  • Analysis and evaluation and contextual awareness

All students will undertake practical workshops in 3D Design & Architecture, Graphic Design, Illustration and Fine Art, which will allow students to make improved informed choices about an area of specialism.

In Year 1 Term 2, students will select an area of specialism, with tutor assessment and guidance and will continue in this area into their Final Major Project in Year 1.

In Year 2 students will be enrolled directly into a specialist area of study:

  • General Art & Design
  • Graphic Design & Illustration
  • 3D Design & Architecture

This allows in-depth development and relevant progression.

You’ll create a portfolio of work to help secure a university place, apprenticeship or employment.

Entry requirements

You’ll need 5 GCSEs at grades 9–4 (A*–C), including English Language and Maths – both of these must be grades 9–4 (A*–C) or Functional Skills Level 2 in English and Maths, or a relevant Level 2 vocational qualification with English and Maths GCSE grades 9–4 (A*–C).

You will also need a folder of artwork.

Assessment

Continuous with final assessment points at the end of year and year 2.

Progression

Choose to follow with a higher education course, an apprenticeship or employment in industry.
