Hair stylists can work anywhere across the world - you could be self-employed, a mobile stylist or even style the stars! You’ll earn a wage while developing advanced skills to become a proficient stylist.
You’ll be based in the workplace and come into College one day a week, to work towards completing your qualification and learn skills based on the renowned National Occupational Standards for Hairdressing.
The units you study will depend on your chosen route and could include:
- Providing a hairdressing consultation service
- Creatively cutting hair using a combination of techniques
- Promoting services or products to customers
- Monitoring procedures to safely control work operations
You will also study optional units related to the course.

Employers and universities really value skills in English and maths. So, building on your existing knowledge of these subjects will help you prepare for your future career or further study. *If you are aged 16-18 and have not yet achieved GCSE English Language and Maths at grade C or above/grade 4 or above don’t worry - we’ll support you with the right lessons to increase your confidence in these essential employability skills.
Our courses are designed to help you achieve your ambitions, whether you plan to go on to a higher level of study or start a career. Employability and study skills will be included to help you develop the broad skills required by industry. They will vary from course to course and are designed to meet local and national employer needs.

Advanced Apprenticeship in Hairdressing, incorporating an NVQ Level 3 in Hairdressing
Adults who are aged 19+ without the necessary qualifications are welcome to apply. You will need to undertake an initial assessment to determine the right level of course for you.
All applicants will be required to undertake an assessment in English and maths prior to enrolling.

There is continuous assessment of each unit. You will present evidence of competence via practical assessments and production of a personal portfolio of evidence.
You will need to buy a kit and uniform to wear whenever you are at College. Kit and uniform costs are to be confirmed and will be discussed at interview.
