Personal Training - Advanced Apprenticeship (Level 3)


Apprenticeship outline

If you’re keen to start your career in the sport and fitness industry while earning a wage, this programme could be just what you’re looking for.

The majority of this programme will be undertaken within the workplace. This could be within a leisure centre, private health club or gym environment.

The course consists of:

  • NVQ Level 3 (YMCA Award Diploma in Personal Training)
  • Level 3 Award in Employment Awareness in Active Leisure and Learning
  • Other industry/coaching qualifications as directed by the employer

Exercise and Fitness - Personal Training - Advanced Apprenticeship (Level 3)


12 - 18 months

Level Level 3
Entry requirements
  • You will need to be employed for a minimum of 30 hours per week in a relevant job but we can assist you in finding a placement.
  • You will also need 5 GCSEs at grades A* to C/9 to 4 or equivalent in English Language and Maths. Some employers may require additional qualifications depending on the role. All applicants should already hold a Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing (Gym).

Adults who are aged 19+ with appropriate industry experience but without the necessary qualifications are welcome to apply.

All applicants will be required to undertake an assessment in English and maths prior to enrolling.


You will be regularly assessed in the workplace and will produce an e-portfolio of evidence to show your understanding of the knowledge required. Assessments will include a combination of practical observations, verbal discussions, written assignments and case studies.


On completion you may secure a permanent position with your employer. If you wish to continue studying you will need good tutor and employer recommendations. It is possible to progress onto one of the following:

  • Foundation Degree/Degree in Sports Coaching or a related subject
  • YMCA Level 3 Diploma in Personal Training (Special Populations)

You are expected to complete a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.
