Apprenticeship outline

Do you have a desire to work outdoors and develop specialist cleaning and horticultural skills that could involve working for local authorities, housing associations, the NHS or private specialist cleaning organisations?

If you are considering this career you will train to become a Cleaning and Environmental Service professional that can make a difference to all our lives. Cleaners ensure that the places we work in and the public places we use are attractive, safe and hygienic. In hospitals cleaning staff are at the forefront of controlling the spread of infection, and in many walks of life cleaners ensure a hazard free environment by ensuring it is safe and clean for the general public.

The Programmes consist of the following:

Technical (Knowledge and Understanding)

  • Level 2 Certificate in Cleaning Principles
  • Level 2 Award in Cleaning Principles

Competence (Skills)

  • Level 2 Certificate in Cleaning and Support Services Skills
  • Level 2 Certificate in Local Environmental Services Skills

Broader transferable skills and behaviours

  • Functional Skills English, Maths Level 1 and 2
  • Employment Rights & Responsibilities (ERR)
  • Personal Learning & Thinking Skills (PLTS) - embedded skills within the programme

Apprenticeship in Cleaning


12 - 18 months

Level Level 2
Entry requirements

You must:

  • Be aged 16 or over
  • There are no formal entry requirements for any level, however the employer may stipulate entry qualifications when recruiting an apprentice to a particular job role.
  • Not be in full-time education or on any other training programme
  • Living in England and have lived in the UK for the past three years
  • Learners will be expected to have a contract to work a minimum of 30 hours per week. This must be paid employment.
  • However, you can still apply for this programme if you are actively seeking employment in this sector, but this must be in place before you can commence the training.
  • As there may be different entry requirements for apprenticeships, depending on the occupational sector, all students are required to have an initial assessment.
  • Demonstrate a good general level of literacy and numeracy
Teaching & assessment

Throughout the programme there will be varied methods of assessment including:

  • Generating a portfolio of evidence including products of work, and reflective accounts and discussions.
  • Direct observation of skills and competence by Assessor and Managers.
  • There will be on-going and end assessments which include tests over the programme.

Continuing in Education, you could progress onto:

  • Advanced Apprenticeship in Cleaning Supervision
  • Advanced Apprenticeship in Facilities Management
  • Qualifications in Team Leading Progression to team leader, supervisor roles into higher level management positions, managing several contracts and a large number of staff.
