Course outline

The focus of this course is to explore what Art Therapy is, who it’s for and to see how we can explore our own issues through art.

Course content:

  • What is Art Therapy?
  • What presenting issues can art therapy be used to help?
  • Who are the founders of Art Therapy?
  • Art and the brain
  • Colours and their meaning
  • Art Timeline
  • Objects of healing – Create something meaningful to you, that may represent a symbol of transformation, using various materials. It may represent a past, present or future event or way of being. Each week we will make a different version of your object, by drawing, painting, modelling etc.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements but you must be aged 19+ and have a good standard of spoken and written English as you will be required tp complete a mandatory course workbook (Individual Learning Plan) each week, with the support of the course tutor.

Teaching & assessment

Tutors will give regular verbal and written feedback. You will be required to complete a short workbook and encouraged to set your own personal targets as part of this course.

Progression

The course tutor can discuss appropriate opportunities if you wish to further your learning in this subject area.

Information will be made available about other course opportunities at Nottingham College and you will have the opportunity to access external Careers Guidance to aid their next steps.

Additional information

Please bring a notebook and pen and your own art supplies.

You can use paint or a paint substitute, like teabags or coffee, paint brushes, paint pot, pallets and water, newspapers or magazines, clay, modelling clay, play dough or real dough, scraps of material, glue, scissors, needle and thread. We will discuss materials as a group.

On week one please bring a sketch book or loose paper, folder or portfolio, pencils, erasers, sharpeners and an object that holds sentimental value that you can draw. This will be your object of healing.
