British Sign Language for Beginners/​Improvers — Part-time

Course outline

This course is perfect if you are looking for an introduction to British Sign Language (BSL).

On completion of the course, you will be able to do some basic signing, interpret others doing basic signs and to have a general deaf awareness.

You will learn:

  • BSL as a language
  • How to fingerspell
  • How to fingerspell your own names and the name of others in your group
  • Family signs, i.e. mother, father, sister, brother, friend etc.
  • Topics to be covered include – weather, feelings, numbers, days of the week, months, timelines in sign and animal signs
  • Basic Deaf Awareness
  • Basic signed conversations including above topics and vocabulary

You will achieve objectives by taking part in group activities, completing signed activities and by completing homework activities in your own time.

Entry requirements

You must be aged 19+ and have a good standard of written and spoken English.

You are required to complete a mandatory course workbook (Unique Learning Programme) each week, with the support of you course tutor.

Teaching & assessment

Tutors will give regular verbal and written feedback. You will be required to complete a short workbook and encouraged to set you own personal targets as part of this course.

Progression

The course tutor can discuss appropriate opportunities if you wish to further your learning in this subject area.
