This course will give an introduction to cake decorating, using a variety of techniques to create a professional finish to your cakes to wow family and friends.

Topics include learning how to make:

  • A variety of flowers for a celebration cake
  • Cover a cake with different icing
  • Modelling
  • Cupcake toppers Piping with butter cream

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements.


Tutors will give regular verbal and written feedback. You will complete a short course workbook with the help of the tutor and will be encouraged to set your own personal targets as part of this course.


Your tutor will discuss progression opportunities with you at the final session as part of the course evaluation. These may include other community courses, employability skills courses, volunteering opportunities and progression onto other Nottingham College courses.

Additional information

You will need to bring your own tools, materials and an apron. You will need 1-2 sponge cakes and cupcakes for this course.

The cost for materials and equipment can be up to £50 for the whole course, but it depends on the individual learner how much they want to spend.

The tutor will provide guidance and what equipment can be purchased at the start of the course.
