This course is aimed at emerging readers and writers working at Entry 1.
You will improve your reading, writing and speaking and listening skills through:
- Ordering words alphabetically
- Using a range of spelling strategies
- Reading and understanding simple texts
- Writing simple and compound sentences
- Writing for a range of purposes
- Using basic punctuation (capital letters, full stops, question and exclamation marks, commas)

There are no formal entry requirements for this course, however, it is NOT suitable for students whose first language is not English (ESOL). This course is aimed at emerging readers and writers working at Entry 1. All learners should attend regularly and be punctual and have a good standard of spoken English. All students are required to complete a range of reading and writing activities during each session, with the support of the tutor, and to practice spellings and complete work at home.
|Teaching & assessment||
You will be taught as a whole class, in small groups and one to one. Games, quizzes, question and answer and marking of reading and writing worksheets will be used to assess learning. Tutors will give regular verbal feedback regularly throughout the course. You will be encouraged to set your own personal targets as part of this course.
You can progress onto part-time and full-time English courses that are available at the main Nottingham College campuses.
You will need to bring a pen and paper or a notebook to each session.
