This course is perfect if you love drawing, working to briefs and developing conceptual ideas, and you want to go onto a related foundation course or degree and/or a career in graphic design, illustration and visual communication.
You’ll learn to explore your creative interests in design with 2D media and graphics. You will develop skills in print-making, digital illustration and graphic techniques, including typography, print and layout design.
You will experience using the creative design cycle – a valuable skill recognised by employers. You’ll explore the history of art and design styles and the impact of changing contemporary issues on design.
Live projects, competition, visits and links with local designers are embedded into the course to build employability skills. Work placements are promoted and supported to build your CV and progression opportunities.
You can expect lots of practical work including:
- Drawing and visual communication at the core
- Workshops in print-making
- CAD (Photoshop/Illustrator)
- Research, analysis and evaluation
- Presentation and exhibiting
You’ll create a portfolio of work to help secure a university place, apprenticeship or employment.

UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma in Graphic Design and Illustration
You’ll need 5 GCSEs at grades 9–4 (A*–C), including English Language and Maths – both of these must be grades 9–4 (A*–C) or Functional Skills Level 2 in English and Maths, or a relevant Level 2 vocational qualification with English and Maths GCSE grades 9–4 (A*–C).
You will also need a folder of artwork.
Choose to follow with a degree foundation diploma or direct entry to a range of creative degree courses. Career paths include graphic designer, illustrator, CADCAM and product design.
