Course outline
This new Higher National Certificate in Graphic Design course has been developed in consultation with local and national industry stakeholders and is aimed at people who want to take their design communication skills to a professional level.
Live briefs are a crucial part of this course and you will have the opportunity to work alongside industry professionals as you develop your skills in response to commercial briefs. You will investigate the methods, techniques and context of graphic design against a background of rapidly developing visual and technical communications media.

Other combinations of qualifications and experience will also be considered, as will Level 3 qualifications not currently listed on the UCAS tariff. We would expect students to be working at (or to demonstrate competency at) Level 2 or above in English/literacy and maths/numeracy. As part of the admissions process, you’ll be asked to provide an online portfolio. Mature applicants with relevant professional experience and/or qualifications are welcome to apply. |
Assessment | Assessment is continuous, being a combination of individual and group presentations, compiling research portfolios and online journals. There are no examinations. |
Progression | After the HNC course, students can progress to our HND Graphic Design course (to be offered from September 2021). From the HND, graduates could progress to our BA (Hons) Art and Design (Graphics) top-up degree, validated by Nottingham Trent University; or a similar top-up course at another institution (subject to entry requirements). Alternatively, they may wish to seek professional employment within the Creative Industries sector. |
