Hairdressing for Beginners - Part-time

Course outline

Learn the basics of hairdressing in this interesting and fun class. As this course is held at the Women's Asian Project, it is for women only.

Topics covered include:

  • Health and safety at the salon when working with hair
  • Types and variety of the hair styles
  • Tools, products and materials
  • Basic cutting and colouring techniques
  • Preparation and application methods
  • Client aftercare

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements however you will be required to complete a short work book, so must be able to undertake some written work.

As this course is held at the Women's Asian Project, it is for women only.


Tutors will give regular verbal and written feedback. You will complete an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) and be encouraged to set your own personal targets as part of this course.


The course tutor can discuss appropriate opportunities if you wish to further your learning in this subject area.

Information will be made available about other course opportunities at Nottingham College and you will have the opportunity to access external Careers Guidance to aid your next steps.

Additional information

You will need to provide your own products and materials and a hairdressing kit and training head are required. The cost for these is typically between £30 and £60 from eBay/Amazon or other suppliers.

You will not be practicing on each other or yourself but can use the training heads.

All learners are responsible for checking any allergies and ensuring they use any products with caution.
