Course outline

HNCs are established qualifications that are well-respected by employers. Designed for people employed in the construction industry in the building, building services and civil engineering sectors and related professions as technicians, they are an ideal way to continue your training while working at the same time.

There are three pathways and in each pathway you'll cover eight topics which include:

Construction and the Built Environment Mandatory units:

  • Design principles
  • Science and materials
  • Group project
  • Health and safety
  • Optional units can be discussed at interview

Building Services Engineering Mandatory units:

  • Design principles
  • Application of scientific principles
  • Group project
  • Health and safety
  • Optional units can be discussed at interview.

Civil Engineering Mandatory units:

  • Design principles
  • Science and materials
  • Applied maths
  • Group project
  • Site surveying
  • Engineering geology and soil mechanics
  • Civil engineering technology
  • Structural analysis and design

Qualification

Pearson HNC in Construction and the Built Environment (Level 4)

Duration

2 years

Level Level 4
Entry requirements

You should be employed in the building services sector of the construction industry and have at least one of the following:

  • At least two A Levels at A2
  • BTEC Diploma or Extended Diploma
  • International Baccalaureate
  • Access to HE Diploma

Other combinations of qualifications and experience will also be considered, as will Level 3 qualifications not currently listed on the UCAS tariff.

We would expect students to be working at (or to demonstrate competency at) Level 2 or above in English/literacy and maths/numeracy.

Mature applicants with relevant professional experience and/or qualifications are welcome to apply.

Teaching & assessment

Each unit is assessed via assignments, coursework and project work.

Progression

You could progress to the final year of a foundation degree in your chosen pathway.

Alternatively, you may wish to progress to the second year of a degree course in a construction-related discipline.
