Course outline
These exciting new courses are designed to equip students with skills, knowledge and the understanding necessary to achieve high performance in the global construction and the built environment sector.
There are three specialist pathways: Construction, Civil Engineering and Quantity Surveying.
There is a strong emphasis on employability skills and the knowledge essential for students with entrepreneurial, employment or academic aspirations. Programme content is designed to be appropriate for entry to or progression within the construction sector and to enable students to progress onto higher-level study.
HNC core modules:
- Individual Project (Pearson Set)

- Science and Materials
- Construction Practice and Management
Construction specialist mandatory units:
- Legal and Statutory Responsibilities in Construction
- Construction Information (Drawing, Detailing, Specification)
Civil Engineering specialist mandatory units:
- Construction Information (Drawing, Detailing, Specification)
- Mathematics for Construction
- Principles of Structural Design
Quantity Surveying specialist mandatory units:
- Legal and Statutory Responsibilities in Construction
- Measurement and Estimating
- Financial Management and Business Practices in Construction
Specialist optional units:
- Select one or two units to make up to 120 credits of study

Entry requirements | You will need A full Level 3 qualification in a related-subject area, with GCSE passes at Grades 9 – 4 (formerly A* - C) in both English Language and Mathematics (or equivalent). Other combinations of qualifications and experience will also be considered, as will Level 3 qualifications not currently listed on the UCAS tariff. Mature applicants with relevant professional experience and/or qualifications are welcome to apply. |
Teaching & assessment | Assessment is continuous, providing a range of evidence of your learning. This may include: essays and reports, individual and group presentations, research and analytical projects, oral and practical assessments. |
Progression | You could progress to the final year of a foundation degree in your chosen pathway. Alternatively, you may wish to progress to the second year of a degree course in a construction-related discipline. |
Additional information | From the HNC, students can progress to the Level 5 Higher National Diploma, and then on to the second or third year of an Honours degree in a construction-related discipline (such as a BSc (Hons) in Civil Engineering or similar). Graduates could go on to seek work in construction and project management, quantity surveying, building surveying, site engineering and architectural technology. |
