Course outline

This course is designed for people who are looking to progress to a management career in the hospitality-related industries.

With its strong practical emphasis, you’ll develop a broad range of skills and an understanding of the global hospitality industry.

All of our lecturers have excellent, in-depth industrial knowledge and experience. We have long-standing links with local, national and international companies such as: Pine Brook Country Club, Boston, USA; Fairmont Hotels, Canada; BSG Interns (Florida); Landmark Hotel, London; Alea Casinos and Marco Pierre White restaurants.

Modules include:

  • Developing business skills
  • Business finance
  • Managing the service encounter
  • Legal environment
  • Personal and professional development (including placement)
  • Operational events management (including running a live event)
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Managing research and information
  • Human resource management
  • Management techniques
  • Events production, design and management

A five-month industrial placement gives first-hand work experience for which you may be able to use your current role. Students can visit a wide range of establishments worldwide, or find their own placement closer to home. There are opportunities to attend study tours abroad – most recently to BSG Interns (Florida) – as well as a programme of local and national visits.

Foundation Degree in Hospitality Management (Events)

Entry requirements

You will need a minimum of 48 UCAS points from:

  • At least two A Levels at ‘A2’
  • A BTEC Diploma or Extended Diploma
  • International Baccalaureate

Other combinations of qualifications and experience will also be considered, as will Level 3 qualifications not currently listed on the UCAS tariff.

Applications from students with a relevant NVQ Level 3 are welcome. Industry experience is an advantage.

We would expect students to be working at Level 2 or above in English Language and Maths.

Mature students with relevant experience and/or qualifications, including an Access to HE Diploma within a relevant area, are welcome to apply.

Teaching & assessment

Each module is internally assessed through individual or group assignments, which can be practical, making use of local industry contacts.

Assignments are industry-focused to develop the relevant skills of managing tasks and solving problems. Examinations take place in the first and second year.

Progression

Once you have completed this course, you could go on to top up to a full degree with our one-year Service Sector Management BA (Hons) Top-up Degree.

Alternatively you could move on to the second or third year of a specialised degree course at university. We have links with local, national and international companies who regularly look for graduates to join their management training programmes.
