Course outline

This course is designed for those who lead a team of internal quality assurance staff. You’ll be able to develop your skills, gain underpinning knowledge and demonstrate competence in the workplace to help you progress in your career.

The course consists of the following units:

  • Unit 4: understanding the principles and practices of internally assuring the quality of assessment
  • Unit 5: internally assure the quality of assessment
  • Unit 6: plan, allocate and monitor work in own area of responsibility

Entry requirements

You’ll need to be managing and monitoring a small assessment team who are assessing candidates each undertaking an awarding organisation (QCF)† accredited qualification.

You’ll also need access to a qualified internal verifier/ quality assurer (IV/IQA) in your own subject area and to be aged 19 or above.

Teaching & assessment

You’ll be assessed continuously over the two years. Each module is assessed by assignments which include: reports, projects, essays and case studies.

You’ll also produce a professional development portfolio which focuses on teaching practice and involves lesson observations. The second year is delivered in a more blended approach with a mix of classroom attendance and online work.

Progression

DET qualifies you to teach in the lifelong learning sector and gives you an opportunity to apply for QTLS status through the Education and Training Foundation.

A person with QTLS status and membership of the Education and Training Foundation will automatically be recognised as a qualified teacher in schools. You could also progress to a BA (Hons) or master’s degree in education.
