This course will cover the theory and practical training required to become an MOT tester (classes 4 and 7).

Topics include:

  • safe working practices in the vehicle test centre
  • working relationships within the vehicle test centre
  • managing your own professional development as an MOT tester
  • carrying out pre-test checks for an MOT test
  • carrying out an MOT test

Entry requirements
  • Hold a current full UK driving license for the vehicle class they want to test.
  • Be a skilled technician with at least 4 years full-time employment in the service and repair of the vehicles types to be tested. Apprentices who have been employed for four years are eligible.
  • Have proof of no unspent convictions for criminal offences connected with the MOT testing scheme or the motor trade, or involving acts of violence or intimidation.
  • A qualification in one of the following:
    • Level 3 Light Vehicle Qualification
    • IMI Accreditation Light Vehicle Inspection
    • IMI Accreditation Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair (Diagnostic Technician)
Teaching & assessment

Assessment includes:

  • a multiple-choice question test
  • a practical assessment

You have to pass both to successfully complete the course.

Progression

Successful completion of this qualification allows you to assess light vehicles (classes 4 and 7). This qualification is a requirement for those wishing to attain the DVSA Certificate of Competence for MOT Testers.
