Course outline

This course if for you if you have developed your sewing skills or completed a beginner and intermediate course.

You may be ready to refine your skills to learn techniques that will improve your sewing and enterprise skills. The techniques learnt will enable you to complete small projects from commercial patterns and add your own detail if you wish to a more professional standard. You can bring their own patterns.

The course will include researching designs, how to cost and what to think about to prepare to sell items, this may be at craft markets or for an individual commission. Such items might include: purses, tote bags, appliqué, knitting or crochet decoration.

Topics include:

  • Using a sewing machine
  • Inserting zips
  • Adding pockets
  • Inserting Lining
  • Adding handles to bags

There are no formal entry requirements but a good standard of English is required.

Teaching & assessment

Tutors will give regular verbal and written feedback. You will be required to complete an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) and encouraged to set your own personal targets as part of this course.

Progression

There may be opportunities to progress onto other courses both in the community and at Nottingham College centres. The course tutor can discuss appropriate opportunities if you wish to further your learning in this subject area.
