Troubleshooting multi-factor authentication issues
If you are having issues with your multi-factor authentication (MFA) on your Nottingham College Microsoft account/Entra ID login, you can follow the following guidance for further help.
First time logging into your college Microsoft account?
You will be required to set up multi-factor authentication the first time you use your college Microsoft account. This setup cannot be bypassed and must be completed.
I'm not receiving a Microsoft Authenticator notification on my phone
If your mobile device uses battery saving or restricts background applications, this can lead to notifications not being shown due to the app not being able to run in the background continuously. You can open the app and go to Settings and disable battery saving options to prevent this.
How do I make sure notifications don't go to an old device if I change my phone?
Adding the Microsoft Authenticator mobile application to your new device doesn't automatically transfer your MFA token or remove the app from your old device. Even deleting the app from your old device isn't enough (including fully wiping or securely erasing the device). You must both delete the app from your old device and unregister the old device from your Microsoft account.
If you can still use your MFA token from an old device, you should add a new Microsoft Authenticator app as a sign-in method before removing the old one.
To add or remove the app from your account, go to the Security Info section under My Account when logged into your college Microsoft account, then use the Add Sign-in method or Remove option from this screen.
What if I'm locked out of my college Microsoft account?
You can become locked out of your college Microsoft account if you lose your current device or delete/wipe your old device without configuring Microsoft Authenticator on a new device first.
You will need to contact the IT Service Desk to reset your MFA, once this done, you can set up MFA on a new device. You can contact our IT Service Desk on 0115 912 5555 to reset your MFA.
