Georgia — Fashion Foundation Degree

The College was recommended to me by a family friend and once I visited and met the course leaders, I knew I wanted to be there.

Georgia — Fashion Foundation Degree —

Georgia, 28, studied the Fashion Foundation Degree at Nottingham College and now she’s a successful Junior Menswear/Boyswear Buyer for fashion retailer New Look.

Georgia explains why College was the right choice for her:

Degree-level was important to me, to ensure I had the best chance at getting a job in the industry. The Foundation Degree gave me the chance to hone my skills and learn more about myself so that I was able to decide what area I’d finalise my degree and which career path I wanted to pursue.”

What is it about Fashion that interests you?

Fashion is a way to express yourself, whether that is what you buy/wear yourself, or what you study! I decided to pursue menswear over womenswear as I feel I can appreciate something good without having a biased opinion.”

What do you enjoy about your job at New Look?

I love the creativity of the role and the reward of seeing styles I have worked on and developed, go into stores/online – it’s amazing! Buying is definitely a good route for someone who is creative, but doesn’t necessarily want to pursue a design-led role, as you get the best of both worlds!”

Why Nottingham College?

Nottingham is well-known for being a great city to study Fashion, so this was definitely a part of my decision. The College was actually recommended to me by a family friend and once I visited and met the course leaders, I knew I wanted to be there.

When it came to applying to university, I wasn’t ready to move out so I decided to study at College as it gave me the chance to stay at home and save money whilst studying. My parents live in Leicestershire so it was local enough for me to drive in every day.”

What did you enjoy about the course?

It was nice to work within a smaller class and meet others that had the same interests as me. The people you study with will always help you to develop more as an individual. It was also nice to have one main tutor for the course who you knew you could confide in or rely on when needed.

The course gave an insight into many different roles you can pursue in the industry and for me this was really important as I still wasn’t 100% clear on where I wanted to end up. My course was also very challenging on time management which is key in this industry, as well as being able to work independently and alongside others.”

Would you recommend the College?

Absolutely! I would say; don’t feel the pressure to study at university right away if it isn’t for you! We all make it to where we want to be on different paths.”
