Marcus — Part-time Foundation Degree in Fashion

My work would not be what it is today without the foundations I learned on the FdA in Fashion at Nottingham College!

Marcus — Foundation Degree Fashion —

Talented fashion designer, Marcus Bearder, 25, studied the part-time Foundation Degree in Fashion at Nottingham College. Now, he is studying a Masters Degree in Contour Fashion Innovation at De Montfort University, alongside his busy role as Head of Product Development within the contour industry.

Not long into his first pattern-cutting job, Marcus decided he wanted to broaden his options and boost his skills with a degree-level course.

Why choose College over university?

Nottingham College offered a part-time route with flexible entry requirements which suited me perfectly. Experience in the industry is just as important as the qualifications — so having the option to study part-time was a real benefit because it meant that I could gain both!”

What did you enjoy about the course?

I loved how much I learnt! I was continually pushed, challenged, and was always supported to be the best designer I could be.

The Foundation Degree had a more technical focus and I feel like the tutors were more passionate about the subject they were teaching compared to other colleges and unis I’d visited. It was also a much more cost-effective option than studying at university, which was a bonus too.”

What is it about the Fashion industry that interests you?

I enjoy the 2D to 3D process. Taking a sketch and realising it into a 3D garment, using creative pattern-cutting and problem solving.”

What are your plans?

I hope to launch my own line of men’s intimate apparel in the future.”

Would you recommend the College to others hoping to pursue a fashion career?

Definitely! The course offered me so many opportunities to explore my aesthetic, develop my technical skills and refine my portfolio.

My work would not be what it is today without the foundations I learned on the FdA in Fashion at Nottingham College! My lecturer, Kathy, was the best teacher I could have asked for, and she still supports me to this day!”
