Apprenticeship introduction
The Lead Engineering Maintenance Technician Level 4 Apprenticeship develops advanced maintenance professionals capable of diagnosing complex faults, leading maintenance activities, and supporting operational improvement.
This role is suited to experienced technicians operating within manufacturing, utilities, or process engineering environments.
You will learn:
- Advanced Technical Knowledge
- Planned, preventative and predictive maintenance strategies
- Mechanical, electrical, fluid power and control systems
- PLCs, automation, and robotics (context dependent)
- Root cause analysis methodologies
- Asset management and reliability improvement
- Engineering documentation and schematics
High-level practical skills:
- Diagnose and repair complex engineering faults
- Install and commission systems
- Apply precision measurement and calibration
- Implement reliability improvements
- Use condition monitoring tools
- Leadership and team skills
- Supervising maintenance activities
- Coaching junior staff
- Coordinating maintenance planning
- Supporting continuous improvement initiatives
Apprenticeship information
- Typical duration: 36–42 months including EPA
- Minimum 20% off-the-job training
- Pearson Level 4 Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Engineering (HTQ status)
- Level 3 Engineering qualification (or equivalent experience)
- GCSE Maths and English at Grade 4 or above
- Employed in a relevant maintenance role
End Point Assessment (EPA)
The EPA is conducted by an independent End Point Assessment Organisation and typically includes:
- Practical observation
- Professional discussion
- Review of portfolio evidence
Assessment components may vary slightly depending on the current assessment plan version.
- HND (Level 5) in Engineering
- Incorporated Engineer (IEng) progression (subject to professional body requirements and experience)
