Cleo Ferris Lunt from Top Valley was looking for a change of direction after teaching in a secondary school, and decided they would like to work in the Civil Service. Fast forward to today and Cleo is now a Tax Professional (Tax Specialist Graduate Programme) at HMRC, and they put some of their success down to a specialised employability course at Nottingham College.

After leaving their previous job, Cleo searched for job vacancies and decided to pursue a career in the Civil Service. However, after applying for some roles without success, they came across the Applying for Jobs in the Civil Service’ part-time course with Nottingham College.

Employability courses like this are designed especially for adults looking to get back into work. They are designed to improve people’s job application skills and increase their confidence. Some are free to people on certain means-tested benefits. The style of teaching really suited Cleo.

The tutors ran the course more like an interactive workshop and they adjusted it to suit the needs of the group, so it was a much better learning experience for me than say a straightforward lecture situation.

Cleo is now going from strength to strength, and has even been back to Nottingham College to share some of their own newly found expertise with jobseekers. Not only have they spoken to groups about their job and experience of successfully securing employment, but they’ve also run mock interviews for students on the current course.

Cleo said: The role I’m going into involves leadership, so the experience of running mock interviews back at College is a good practice run for the future. It was good because we were helping each other out.”

Cleo’s employability course is a specialist course that Nottingham College runs for jobseekers.

Unemployed people who are interested in this specific course can find more details and see eligibility criteria on www.nottinghamjobs.com under Attend Recruitment Days and Job Fairs’, or by contacting Lisa Saunders, Nottingham College Development Worker, on 0115 884 2389 or by emailing lisa.saunders@nottinghamcollege.ac.uk.

Nottingham College also runs a wide range of other part-time course for adults who are looking to learn new skills, and all details are on our course pages.

You can apply for most of these directly through the College, and this includes employability courses that teach back to work skills.
