News: Students love tennis coaching!
More than 1,500 primary school pupils had coaching with Nottingham College Sport and Public Services students at the Nottingham Mini Tennis Schools Festival recently.
Fifty Sport and Public Services students delivered the coaching event, which was organised by the Lawn Tennis Association. It ran alongside the 2019 Nature Valley Open Nottingham at Nottingham Tennis Centre in June.
Despite rain stopping a little bit of play, the students ran a variety of activities, from tennis competitions to learning the basics of rallying, then finished off with a competition between all the schools who attended.
The students were able to gain valuable work experience, developing skills including communication, leadership and team work. They also found out what goes into running a large public event.
Working at the Tennis Centre was a valuable and unique experience. It gave me insight into a completely different field of work than I’m used to. Working with the kids was fun and despite the weather I think we had a great time out on the courts.
It wasn’t without its pressure, but I came away from it with a revitalised interest in a sport I’ve always enjoyed and a new one in coaching and teaching.

Nottingham College Tennis Apprentice Luke Castle helped organise the event, as well as working as a coach.
I felt that the planning and organisation went well and provided me with an insight into how to plan a large event, giving me valuable skills.

Despite the weather I thought that the children really enjoyed the festival and had a good time. I enjoyed all the challenges throughout the week, including the last minute changes in the plan, as this helped me to learn new skills.
