Course introduction

This new Level 4 Higher National Certificate in Film and Television course has been designed to equip students with the skills, knowledge, and insights needed to excel in this global industry. 

The course brings together a wide range of skills and technical understanding from areas that are increasingly converging. You will build up production skills covering the creation of ideas from written concepts, scripts and audience research through to filming and editing for film, television, audio and online. 

The aim is that HND graduates will be best placed to secure employment either as freelance or for an organisation.

Units are planned to include: 

  • Concept and Development – This module is aimed at enhancing your foundational knowledge, understanding, and skills in creative practice through the exploration of film and television. You will study the history, theories, and advancements in the field, along with the technical knowledge and skills needed to support your creative work.
  • Creative Project – This module provides you with the opportunity to apply and consolidate your learning by creating a project that showcases your skills and understanding.

  • Wednesday 13.00 – 20:00 and Thursday 13:00 - 16:00
  • Plus self directed study

Facilities

The course will be based at our newly-developed Digital Media Centre at the City Hub campus. You will have access to our new broadcasting studio, podcasting/audio studio, 2 photography studios as well as the industry-standard Adobe Creative Suite. You will have numerous opportunities to engage with other students aiming to get into the creative industries and will work in response to industry briefs.

Pearson BTEC Level 4 Higher National Certificate in Film and Television - subject to approval

You’ll need a minimum of 64 UCAS points from:

  • At least two A Levels at A2
  • Level 3 BTEC Diploma or Extended Diploma
  • International Baccalaureate
  • Access to HE Diploma
  • T levels

Other combinations of qualifications and experience will also be considered, as will Level 3 qualifications not currently listed on the UCAS tariff.

GCSE English Language and Maths passes at Grades 9 to 4 (previously A* to C) are required. As an equivalent, we expect applicants to be working at (or to demonstrate their competency at) Level 2 or above in English/literacy and Maths/numeracy.

Mature applicants with relevant industrial experience - but without the standard entry requirements - are encouraged to apply.

Applicants will be considered based on experience and may be invited to an informal interview to assess their ability to successfully complete the course.

A mixture of traditional and innovative assessment methods will be used, including individual and group presentations, discussions, report writing, case studies, presentations, research and project work, examinations, reflective journals and work-based projects.

After completion of the HNC, you could progress on to the Level 5 Higher National Diploma with us or enter the second year of a university degree.

HND Graduates will be well-placed to progress to training or employment in the global creative industries - such as: camera operator, sound/lighting technician, editor, producer, director of photography, videographer, games developer, filmmaker or into the teaching profession.
