Planting and Maintenance — Part-time

Course outline

This course is perfect if you are wanting to acquire skills and knowledge to help develop and maintain a planned gardening project.

You will learn to:

  1. Develop the knowledge and understanding required to set up and maintain a planned gardening project.
  2. Enhance social, physical and emotional well-being through practical garden-based activity.
  3. Gain an awareness of the employability relevance of gaining gardening skills.

Over the course we will cover:

  1. Summer Jobs.
  2. Solar Power: Summer Lights and Water Features.
  3. Specialisms: Focusing or your Garden Passions!
  4. The Garden and Climate Change.
  5. Enjoying your Space: Shade, Sun and Socialising.
  6. Harvesting: Sharing and Storing.
  7. Making the most of your Gardening Experience: Opportunities in Employability, Training and Volunteering.
  8. When and Where to find the best deals and Gardening on a Budget.
  9. Portfolio: Completion and Handing – in.
  10. Feedback / Next Steps and end-of-course Celebration Event.

You can expect to achieve objectives by taking part in groupwork, individual achievement-recording tasks and practical gardening jobs both outdoors and indoors.

Entry requirements

You must be aged 19+ and have a good standard of English as you will be required to complete a short workbook with the help of your tutor.

Teaching & assessment

Tutors will give regular verbal and written feedback. You will be required to complete an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) and encouraged to set your own personal targets as part of this course.

Progression

The course tutor can discuss appropriate opportunities for if you wish to further your learning in this subject area. Information will be made available about other course opportunities at Nottingham College

A health questionnaire, risk assessment and health and safety checks will be addressed prior to beginning this course.

This course is geared towards a SUMMER context, ending a full academic / growing year experience from beginner to advanced level through the seasons and all three academic terms.
