Researching Your Family Tree for Improvers — Part-time

Course outline

This course is perfect if you are interested in continuing to research your family tree, while finding out more about the life and times of your ancestors.

Talks from local heritage volunteers and professionals will show how family and community history can be at the centre of understanding the past around us for all ages. There will also be the opportunity to take part in an end-of-course exhibition of our collective research entitled “Family History: Memories to Cherish and Pass on”.

You will learn:

The knowledge and skills required to continue researching your Family Tree, building your UK and Community History understanding to help explain why your Family History looks the way it does. Over the course we will cover:

  1. Introduction to continuing Family Tree researching.
  2. Setting up an Oral History archive.
  3. Finding out more: College and University courses
  4. Libraries, Tourist Information Centres and Local Archives.
  5. History Societies / Magazine Subscriptions / History in the Media / Historical Literature.
  6. Buildings, Maps and Changes through time/ Guides: Tour of The Adams Building.
  7. Independent Research and Introduction to Week 10 Exhibition and Celebration.
  8. Independent Research and prep for Celebration Exhibition / How your research fits into Primary and Secondary Education.
  9. Independent Research and prep for Celebration Exhibition.
  10. End of Part One Celebration / Next Steps – Researching Your Family Tree: Improvers Course

You can expect to achieve objectives by taking part in group activities, individual course book tasks and digital revision as appropriate.

You must be aged 19+ and have a good standard of English as you will be required to complete a short workbook with the help of your tutor.

Teaching & assessment

Tutors will give regular verbal and written feedback. You will be required to complete an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) and encouraged to set your own personal targets as part of this course.

Progression
  • The course tutor will discuss the personal and local community benefits of creating an archive from your finding and looking at the appropriate way to present it for others to understand.
  • Information will be made available to students about course opportunities at Nottingham College.
  • You will have the opportunity to access external Careers Guidance to aid your next steps.
