Decorating Cakes to Sell — Part-time

Course outline

This course is suitable for students who want to improve on their basic cake decorating skills. Students will have the opportunity to learn how to cover cakes with a professional finish and create simple decorations, to include modelling and sugar flowers.

Topics include:

  • Decorating a wedding cake with wired flowers and a variety of frills, roses and petals
  • Making a celebration cake using butter cream
  • Calculating how to price cakes to sell

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements but a good standard of English is required.

Teaching & assessment

Tutors will give regular verbal and written feedback. You will be required to complete an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) and encouraged to set your own personal targets as part of this course.

Progression

There may be opportunities to progress onto other courses both in the community and at Nottingham College centres. The course tutor can discuss appropriate opportunities if you wish to further your learning in this subject area.

Additional information

You will need to bring your own tools, materials and an apron. You will need one sponge cake and dummy cakes for this course.

The cost for materials and equipment can be up to £50 for the whole course, but it depends on the individual learner how much they want to spend.

The tutor will provide guidance and what equipment can be purchased at the start of the course.
