Course outline

This course is perfect if you are passionate about make up and would like to perfect your knowledge and skills for a successful career in this highly skilled, demanding and creative industry.

You’ll learn about the application of specialised make up and artificial hair and prosthetics for theatrical and media purposes. The course covers every aspects of advanced facial and full-body make up techniques for film and media work, as well as for stage, display and photographic purposes.

You can expect to have no limits placed on you for how creative you can be in this field. You will be given experience working with our performing arts students to produce theatrical shows, plus you’ll get hands-on experience with the college’s partners such as the NHS, in supporting training events in which realistic special effect injuries are required. As part of your course, you will also be required to obtain work experience.

You can study this course at either the Beeston Campus or Clarendon Campus.

Level 3 Advanced Technical Diploma in Theatrical, Special Effects and Media Make-Up Artistry

Entry requirements

You’ll need:

  • 5 GCSEs at Grade 9-4 (A*-C), including English Language and Maths at Grade 9-4 (A*-C); or
  • A relevant Level 2 vocational qualification plus English Language and Maths at GCSE Grade 9-4 (A*-C).

You will be Interviewed and will have a trade test and as well as an English assessment. You will also need to bring an art/make up portfolio to your interview.

Teaching & assessment

You will be assessed through practical observations, assignments, portfolio, and theory-based units and tests.


Choose to follow with further study at Level 3 or 4 to further specialise in a career in the theatrical make up or special effects industry, or to work at high level within the media and/or fashion industry. Alternatively, you could move into a job as a make up artist in a salon or special effects artist at a theatre.
