Course outline
This course is perfect if you are passionate about make-up and would like to perfect your knowledge and skills for a successful career in this highly skilled, demanding and creative industry.
You’ll learn about the application of specialised make-up and artificial hair and prosthetics for theatrical and media purposes. The course covers every aspects of advanced facial and full-body make-up techniques for film and media work, as well as for stage, display and photographic purposes.
Mandatory units:
- Working with colleagues within the beauty related industries
- Monitor and maintain health and safety practice in the salon
- Creative hairdressing design skills
- Design and apply face and body art
- Fashion and photographic make-up
- Apply airbrush make-up to the face
- Camouflage make-up
You can expect to have no limits placed upon you for how creative you can be in this field – our experienced staff are passionate about the industry and waiting to share their knowledge with you. You will be given experience working on a theatrical show early in your course, plus you’ll get hands-on experience with planned photo shoots and events.
As part of your course, you will also be required to obtain work experience

Entry requirements | You’ll need 5 GCSEs at grades 9–4 (A*–C), including English Language and Maths – both of these must be grades 9–4 (A*–C) or Functional Skills Level 2 in English and Maths. |
Assessment | You’ll complete a range of practical assessments and written assignments and you’ll leave us with a great portfolio of work. |
Progression | Choose to follow with additional study at Level 3 or 4 to further specialise in a career in the theatrical make-up or special effects industry. Or, to work at a high level within the media and/or fashion industry, you could move into a job as a make-up artist in a salon or special effects artist at a theatre. |
