Course outline
This course explores how to bring a short story to life. It is suitable for beginners or writers who want to develop skills to craft compelling short stories.
Students will develop different elements of a short story, from ideas, how to create realistic characters and a well-paced plot into a complete story.
On this course, you will learn to:
- Build engaging character profiles
- Structure and shape a plot
- Follow a thematic approach
- Use conflict to drive character interactions
- Utilise settings to provide a descriptive backdrop
Students will achieve objectives by taking part in group activities, completing written activities, online quizzes and other interactive activities both during the session and by completing homework activities in their own time.

Entry requirements | There are no formal entry requirements. All learners should have a good standard of written and spoken English as you will be required to complete a mandatory course workbook (Unique Learning Programme) each week, with the support of their course tutor. |
Teaching & assessment | Tutors will give regular verbal and written feedback. You will be required to complete a short workbook and encouraged to set your own personal targets as part of this course. |
Progression | The course tutor can discuss appropriate opportunities if you wish to further your learning in this subject area.
