Short Story Writing — Part-time

Course outline

We all have a story to tell, learn how to craft your story. Take real-life or fictional events to create a well-paced plot. Use realistic characters, convincing dialogue and add twists to produce a memorable story.

Your story could be a competition winner. Suitable for beginners, improvers and writers who want to master the craft of short fiction.

On this course you will learn to:

  • Follow free writing exercises to develop short inspirational fiction
  • Build engaging character profiles
  • Structure and shape a plot
  • Follow a thematic approach
  • Use conflict to drive character interactions
  • Utilise settings to provide a descriptive backdrop
  • Organise a portfolio of short fiction for submission or publication.

You will achieve objectives by taking part in group activities, completing written activities, online quizzes and other interactive activities both during the session and by completing independent learning activities in your own time.

Community classes are first steps into learning for many adults, enabling them to find out more about a subject of interest in a welcoming, inclusive local venue.

From September 2024, funding changes mean that courses primary aim is to support students into further education or employment opportunities (paid or voluntary). If students wish to continue studying the same subject on a leisure basis, it may be possible to set up full cost courses, subject to tutor and room availability.
